The Kingdom of Tonga successfully launched its Nationally Determined Contributions Review Report during the National Climate Change Awareness Week Exhibition Day in September 2020.
The report, launched by the Hon. Prime Minister of Tonga Rev. Dr. Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa, was endorsed by the Cabinet of Tonga on 18th September 2020. This Review Report presents Tonga’s progress towards its mitigation and adaptation targets in its 2015 Intended Nationally Determined Contributions.
The report also presented recommendations as the basis for Tonga’s 2020 enhanced NDC, which will be submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in December this year.
This activity was led by the Tonga Department of Climate Change with support from the Regional Pacific NDC Hub through its implementation partner, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI).
Technical assistance was delivered by GGGI staff through virtual means in light of COVID-19 travel restrictions. Following an inception mission conducted virtually in March 2020, the Department of Climate Change convened a meeting with the Tonga Joint National Action Plan (JNAP) Technical Group in July 2020 to present the report on the review of Tonga’s 2015 Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) and recommendations for the Enhanced NDC. This was further complemented by consultation workshops from 29 – 30 July 2020 and the feedback received was considered and integrated into a final review and recommendations report.
The review report addresses the progress made towards the existing goals of the 2015 INDC and provides recommendations for the scope of the 2020 Enhanced NDC. These recommendations include:
- Updating and adding relevant information,
- Revising and/or expanding the existing goals and targets,
- Providing information on specific measures to achieve those goals, and
- Improving the clarity and transparency of the NDC.
The review report places Tonga in a favorable position to develop and submit a more robust and enhanced NDC to the UNFCCC.
