The Tourism Authority of Kiribati (TAK) unveiled a new Mauri Mark Program on Monday, 27 September 2021, as part of their World Tourism Day celebrations.

Kiribati's new rating system for tourism accommodation, restaurants and bars, small leisure crafts, and activity/tour operators is the Mauri Mark program. The program will involve an annual assessment of tourism businesses based on a set of pre-determined criteria, followed by rate allocation based on the scores obtained.

Hotels and lodges will be evaluated based on business operations, fire safety procedures, health and hygiene standards, safety and maintenance, facilities and in-room amenities, environmental sustainability practices, and guest support service under the accommodation rating.

TAK CEO Petero Manufolau presented the program, inviting accommodation providers to use it as an opportunity to improve quality and service delivery, especially as the country prepares for international border reopening in January 2022.

He acknowledged that change would take time, but emphasized that programs like the Mauri Mark will help them achieve their vision of sustainable tourism by 2036.
